I tell Ya Herbie

The conference championships are upon us and the coaching silly season arrives with it, so it's time for a few looks at college football with another edition of I Tell Ya' Herbie.

I Tell Ya' Herbie:

The strangest entry to a championship has to be Boise State and UNLV in the Mountain West title game.

Entering the final week, Boise State, San Jose State, and Air Force all trailed first place UNLV by one game with UNLV playing San Jose State and Boise State against Air Force.

San Jose State upset UNLV and Boise defeated Air Force for a three-way tie for the two title game slots.

Boise State had beaten San Jose State, and San Jose State had beaten UNLV, but the Rebels and Broncos didn't play this season, so there wasn't a best record tiebreaker and the conference decided on a computer rating which rated Boise State and UNLV as the best two.

SO San Jose State beat the first-place team, forced their way into a tie for first, and won't be in the title game as the team they beat and has the same record will play for the title.

I Tell Ya' Herbie:

The rumors are running wild about Jim Harbaugh's future in the NFL and while it makes sense for Harbaugh to leave Michigan before the tides pull him out to sea, the two jobs filled with interim options for now might not be the best fit for Captain Khaki.

The Raiders really like Antonio Pierce and the Panthers and owner David Tepper might not want to give Harbaugh the type of control he may want, although Harbaugh and Tepper may very well deserve each other, they may not want to work together.

The sleeper team? The Los Angeles Chargers, who might be moving on Brandon Staley at the end of the year,  happen to have an outstanding young quarterback, and Harbaugh has connections to the area.

I Tell Ya' Herbie:

Indiana announced the hiring of their new coach, Curt Cignetti, formerly of James Madison after letting Tom Allen go after seven seasons.

Cignetti was successful at James Madison but he may be taking the most difficult job in the Big Ten and yes, that includes Northwestern.

Indiana is a basketball school in a state that doesn't produce a ton of in-state talent and shares the state with Purdue and Notre Dame for what talent is available.

Going to be a difficult process for Cignetti in Bloomington.

I Tell Ya' Herbie:

The conference title games throughout Friday and Saturday gives you all the college football that one could wish for but I wish one of the Group of Five conferences would consider a Thursday game to kickoff the championship weekend.

The MAC would seem to be the perfect fit as during the final month of the season, the conference already plays most of its games in mid-week as part of their "MACtion" series.

I Tell Ya' Herbie:

My picks for the teams in the final year of the four game playoff?

Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, and Texas.
