Zach Parise's overtime goal(43) capped off a wild and less than smooth game to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning that ended the six game Devil losing streak and gave the Devils two badly needed points in the race for the Atlantic Division title.
The Devils remaining goals to Jamie Langenbrunner (26 and 27),Brendan Shanahan (6,Penalty Shot) and Jay Pandolfo (5).
New Jersey cannot rest on the win for very long as they travel to Buffalo for a Saturday evening tilt against the Sabres.
Bullpen Notes
1) The Devils defense tried to give Tampa the game as both of the Lightning third period goals were caused by defensive lapses.
Ryan Malone's goal was on a breakaway that was clearly a product of the defensemen not getting back and Martins Karsums goal on a rebound could have been avoided had Dainius Zubrus even tried to get in the way.....
2) The Shanahan goal on a penalty shot began to get the Devils revved up after a scoreless game to that point and failing on two early second period power plays.
Shanahan's up the middle shot on Karri Ramo was perfectly positioned as Ramo was expecting Shanahan to go high.
3) The penalty was called as Ramo had thrown his stick at the puck and of course (as Sam Wyche would say) that is a penalty.
That is one penalty that doesn't come up very often...
4) Kevin Weekes started and allowed a cheap goal off his shoulder in the first period before being felled with a knee injury early in the second.
No word yet on the seriousness of the injury, but Scott Clemmensen is likely on the road for Lowell as we type.
5) Jamie Langenbrunner's two goals occurred after the Captain was very perturbed after a bogus holding penalty allowed a power play that Tampa scored on to make the lead 2-0.
Langenbrunner ramped up the intensity after that and was arguably the most dominant player of the evening...
Bonus Round
Marty Brodeur got the win after not expecting to play on the night of his being honored for his record breaking achievement earlier in the month.
Marty was pretty sharp considering and two of three goals that he allowed had to be more on the defense than him....
Bullpen Notes
The Pirates kept Jesse Chavez over Evan Meek for the final spot in the Bucco bullpen.
Meek was assigned to AAA Indianapolis.
Chavez has a really cool throwing motion that is fun to watch, how effective it is in Pittsburgh is another question.
On the signing front
This will be picking up shortly, but a few additions.
