Reviewing the tape- Browns back to normal

The Cleveland Browns one week aberration of having an offense ended in Cincinnati on Sunday in a 16-7 deceivingly close loss to the Bengals.
The Browns host a rare 4:00 start this week as the San Diego Chargers visit Lake Erie.....

Brownie Bits

1) The biggest loss (other than the game) was losing Shaun Rogers for the last five games to a "Lower leg/ankle" injury late in the game.
Rogers was the only impact player on the Cleveland defense and leaves an already injury plagued/ talent starved defense even more weakened....

2) The other loss was safety Brodney Pool leaving the game with yet another concussion.
Pool seems to have one or two of these each season and concussions are the type of thing that become a recurring issue as time wears on.
Pool and the Browns need to have this checked out and perhaps see if Pool should even continue to play football.....

3) Onto the game and right back to the same mundane play calling with one exception-In the third quarter (and on the Browns only scoring drive) Josh Cribbs took the snap and rolled to his right and the Bengals followed, expecting the same run play that has been featured all season.
Instead,Cribbs stopped and threw an 18 yard completion to Brady Quinn.
That was original and instead of following up on that,it was right back to the same old calls that featured the classic 3 and 4 yard passes...

4) Brady Quinn did run for the Browns only TD,but he only managed 100 yards through the air and his passes were back to his previous problems with accuracy.
Far too many overthrown balls, although his receivers dropped balls over the course of the game as well.
The Bengals defense is far superior to the Lions, but it looked like two different players wearing number 10....

5) More on the the puzzle that has become Brian Robiskie.
Robiskie inactive again and Jake Allen, who had only been with the team for a few days was active.
Allen had one pass thrown to him and it was well overthrown....

6) David Veikune was inactive as well,he sat for waiver pickup Matt Roth.
Roth played pretty well (a few tackles and a sack) in his Cleveland debut and I remember Roth from his college days as a Iowa Hawkeye and was a second round pick for Miami a few years back.
This could be a rare Eric Mangini roster move that pays off.

7) You look at the stats of Carson Palmer and figure the Browns shut him down, but allowing Cincinnati 210 yards on the ground tends to make the passing game not as important.

8) The Shaun Rogers horsecollar tackle of Carson Palmer with seconds to go in the half drew the personal foul and 15 yards and handed the Bengals three points.
Palmer looked to me like he was going out of bounds, but Rogers was hustling, just made a bad play....

9) I thought Mike Adams was OK and he will need to be at least that again as he is the likely replacement for Brodney Pool.
The Browns are in trouble either way.
If Adams goes in for Pool, that means a lineup return for Brandon McDonald, if Adams plays the corner, then it's Hank Poteat for Pool.
Yuck.

10) A thought that could work with Rogers out?
Corey Williams was an excellent defensive tackle in Green Bay and has struggled at end for the Browns, maybe an idea could be returning Williams to the interior line....

11) I am already beginning the long process of ideas for the mock hiring of me as GM after the season ends.
Some of you may remember the four part series on Fixing the Pirates in 2007 before Dave Littlefield got the axe.
That was well received and as bad as the Browns mess is,a similar series looks like fun.
It also is interesting to look back a few years and see how my ideas meshed with the Pirates changes, both good and bad...
