I spent much of yesterday watching baseball from the left coast as I watched the Giants defeat the Diamondbacks live and taped the Padres 1-0 loss to the Cubs for work.
The results gave the Giants a three game lead with the Padres coming into San Francisco needing to sweep the series to force a one game playoff.
I am not going to get into particulars of the games, although the Cubs-Padres was a good one,but instead focus on West Coast baseball, which is different than its East Coast cousin.
I know the players are from the same places, but the game is more laid back when you watch games from there and much of that seems to be from the fans.
The Giants seem to have the closest version to the East Coast fans, but the remainder of the teams seem to have fans that are watching a performance than rooting hard for their team.
The National League West teams (I rarely watch an AL game with the occasional exception of Oakland) do have some sharp ballparks.
San Francisco's stadium ranks only behind Pittsburgh in my opinion and Dodger Stadium is a jewel that has stood the test of time.
San Diego and Colorado both have nice retro parks and Arizona's retractable roof isn't a favorite, but the weather makes it a must to have.
Television games are easy to listen as well with the Giants pairing of Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow ranking as maybe the best local tandem in the league.
The Dodgers offer the classic tones of Vin Scully and the Padres are enjoyable to watch with the return of Dick Enberg to the summer game and are enjoyable to kick back on a later summer night watching and listening.
Local commercials are funny as well with chains and products that you never see locally or have even heard of often make me laugh out loud.
Duane Kuiper's commercial with a local Solar company is a personal favorite.
One rarely has to hear the dreaded words "Rain Delay" from west coast games other than Seattle, who uses the retractable roof to combat their weather issues not to mention the ease of having a game to watch when it is scheduled.
Thanks to the MLB extra innings package for opening a new world of local baseball from across the country and giving me an even bigger look at the baseball cosmos!
