The boxing weekend will see three titles defended and even though only one of them can be considered more than a showcase fight, it still should be worth watching on the competing platforms Saturday night.
Two of the title fights will be on DAZN and even though neither is considered the main event (two celebrities that I've never heard of are part of that), both have potential interesting futures, should they win.
Devin Haney defends his newly handed (Not won) WBC lightweight title against Alfredo Santiago.
Santiago only signed to take this fight a few days ago, so I do wonder how prepared that he is for a talent such as Haney.
Santiago is undefeated and has two notable names on his record in Jonathan Barrios, who once held a minor title, and former feather/junior lightweight contender, Jayson Velez.
Santiago isn't a big puncher though (4 KOs in his 12 wins) and I'm not sure how a light puncher is going to match with the talented Haney.
I really like Devin Haney and even though I'm against how he obtained his title, the fault there goes to the sanctioning body, not the fighter.
The other world championship to be defended on the card from Los Angeles with slick boxing Billy Joe Saunders placing his WBO super-middleweight belt on the line against Marcelo Caceres of Argentina.
Saunders won the vacant 168-pound title that was given up by Gilberto Ramirez, in May with a unanimous decision over unknown Shefat Isufi after having his middleweight crown stripped from him for failing a PED test before what would have been the biggest fight of his career defending against Demetrius Andrade.
Caceres is definitely a journeyman with an 18-4 record and lost his last fight to Patrick Wojcicki in his only appearance in the ring in 2019.
This appears to be a mismatch and the only suspense could be if Saunders steps up the offense and impressively stops Caceres or settles for an easy decision win.
The most competitive of the three title fights take place up the road from Los Angeles in Fresno as Jamel Herring defends his WBO junior lightweight title for the first time against mandatory contender Lamont Roach on ESPN Plus.
Herring defeated Masayuki Ito in May in what was considered a mild upset to win the championship but was given an immediate mandatory in Lamont Roach, who is promoted by Golden Boy.
The inter-promotional match is likely to go the distance as Herring has knockouts in only 10 of his 20 wins and Roach has an even lower percentage with just seven of his nineteen victories.
The co-main event will bring the return of Kubrat Pulev in his first fight since his kissing a reporter following his seventh-round knockout of Bogdan Dinu back in March in what was a very entertaining fight.
Pulev, who is rated first by the IBF and will either be in line to face the winner of the Andy Ruiz-Anthony Joshua rematch or fight for the vacant title, should the winner choose other options, isn't looking to fight anyone that could endanger his title shot (although they thought that about Dinu and almost burnt them) and signed to face veteran Rydell Booker.
Booker, who was a one time prospect in the early 2000s before going to jail for 13 years, has fought only one opponent of note since his return and lost that one via decision to prospect Jermaine Franklin.
