Boxing Challenge

The 2021 Boxing Challenge begins in Texas with a lightweight eliminator that will lead to bigger things in the next fight for the winner.

Social media sensation and power puncher Ryan Garcia has dazzled in his last few fights with quick and brutal knockouts, but the young banger will be taking a giant move up the ladder in competition against slick Briton Luke Campbell.

Garcia hasn't fought since February when he disposed of Francisco Fonseca in one round and in his previous fight, Garcia won a grudge match with Romero Duno in one round.

Still, Garcia was taken the distance by his best opponents in Jayson Velez and Carlos Morales and there are remaining questions about Garcia's power against top opponents.

He'll get one against Campbell, who has been idle since August 2019 when he lost a unanimous decision to Vasyl Lomachenko and lost his other title shot in a split decision loss to then-champion Jorge Linares that could have gone to either man.

Campbell's a slick boxer and I can see him outboxing Garcia all night long, but I can also see Garcia wearing down Campbell with the bigger punches and taking control of the fight in the second half.

I've been looking forward to this one as the winner will have the WBC champion, Devin Haney, for their next fight and we'll see if Ryan Garcia is a real contender or a prospect pushed beyond his means too quickly.

The co-main event will see Rene Alvarado defending his minor 130-pound title against Roger Gonzalez.

The veteran Alvarado is on an eight-fight winning streak and a seventh-round stoppage of Gutierrez is one of those wins, so Alvarado is favored to earn a repeat victory.

In the opening fight, IBF junior flyweight champion Felix Alvarado defends his championship against DeeJay Kriel of South Africa.

Alvarado, the twin brother of Rene, will be making his second title defense against Kriel, who is the former IBF mini-flyweight also known as minimumweight champion.
