I thought Munguia was doing very well until the fourth-round knockdown and I didn't give a round to him after that, although he never quit trying and landed an occasional right hand.
The judges scored for Alvarez by 117-110, 116-111, and a surprisingly tight 115-112.
I scored the fight 117-110 for Alvarez, who again seems to be blowing off the fight that fans want most against David Benavidez, and instead appears to be headed for a Mexico vs Puerto Rico matchup against Edgar Berlanga, who doesn't really deserve it or is close to ready for Canelo but looking at potential opponents in the division, there isn't anyone better qualified that Alvarez hasn't already defeated.
So as much as I am non-plussed for Canelo-Berlanga ( and I think it won't do well on PPV unless a strong undercard is added) I don't see a contender that would bring a better challenge or a higher PPV buy rate than Berlanga, so I guess we are stuck with that fight.
As for Munguia, he fought bravely in his first defeat and he showed heart in getting up from the uppercut that floored him in the fourth round.
I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Munguia.
I haven't had time to watch the rest of the card yet, so here are the results and boxing challenge standings.
Mario Barrios defeated Fabian Maidana by unanimous decision in a welterweight match.
Eimantas Stanionis defeated Gabriel Maestre by unanimous decision in a welterweight battle.
Brandon Figueroa stopped Jessie Magdaleno in round nine in a featherweight tilt.
And from Japan
