Browns slip against Saints,lose 17-10

The Cleveland Browns allowed two touchdowns in the third quarter and didn't score a point in the second half as the Browns threw away a would-be victory in their final home game in an icebox-like stadium to the New Orleans Saints 17-10.

Nick Chubb rushed for 92 yards to lead the offense and Amari Cooper caught six passes for seventy-two yards to lead the receivers.

Cleveland drops to 6-9 on the season and will finish the year with two road games in Washington and Pittsburgh.

Brownie Bits

1)  Maybe the ground wasn't covered with snow but the weather was certainly a factor (six degrees and a windchill of fifteen below at kickoff) with the temperature and wind chill.

The game was the third coldest ever played in Cleveland and you would think that the home team would have an advantage over a team that plays in a dome in the Deep South.

2) However, you would be wrong as once the Saints figured out in the second quarter that using running quarterback Taysom Hill and Alvin Kamara to pound the football at the Browns run defense was the best way to get back into the game.

After the Saints committed to the running game, they outscored Cleveland 17-0 for the remainder of the game.

3) And there are the weekly Kevin Stefanski play-calling questions.

Early in the fourth quarter after two Nick Chubb runs, the Browns have a third and two on their own thirty-nine.

Considering the conditions and having Nick Chubb on your team, one would think that at least one running play would be in order.

Instead, DeShaun Watson throws two incomplete passes.

Too smart for his own good could be the epitaph on the Kevin Stefanski tenure in Cleveland.

4) The vaunted Cleveland pass rush never got to Andy Dalton and while Dalton threw only fifteen passes, I only remember one time that Myles Garrett (or anyone else) came close to dumping Dalton to the ground.

5) DeShaun Watson threw thirty-one passes (Over twice as many as the Saints tossed) on a day that should have favored what the Browns offensive identity is supposed to be.

No matter the performance of Watson, that's on Kevin Stefanski.

6) Watson didn't dazzle but in this weather very few could do so.

Watson's one interception wasn't a great pass but David Bell couldn't haul it in as it bounced off Bell and into the hands of a nemesis of Browns past- safety Daniel Sorensen, who returned the ball thirty-six yards to the Cleveland fifteen and gave the Saints a short field for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown.

7) Watson also didn't receive help from his pass catchers on the final drive when second and third down throws to Donovan Peoples-Jones and David Njoku were both on the money with both receivers failing to bring the ball in for game-tying scores.

Watson was then sacked on the fourth down attempt to end the game.

8) Watson also threw an excellent pass to Amari Cooper in the end zone in the second quarter but Cooper dropped the ball when just as the ball arrived, Cooper slipped on the slick turf and was unable to grab the throw.

It's understandable to have these things happen under the playing conditions but receivers are paid to catch the football.

9) The Browns did make a move earlier this week by signing veteran right tackle Jack Conklin to a three-year contract extension.

The signing of Conklin locks three of the five starters on the offensive line (Wyatt Teller and Joel Bitonio) into long-term contracts with a looming decision in the off-season for the team to choose whether or not to pick up the fifth-year option of left tackle Jedrick Wills.

10) The Browns were officially eliminated from the playoffs with the defeat.

This took longer than expected as due to an eye injury, I am only able to read/write in short time bursts.

That is also why there was not a PPM this week.

Freezing, looking to spring and a few thoughts

Another ice blaster of a day with a looming worse tomorrow,so thinking of spring....

Pitchers and catchers reported yesterday,so the ray of warmth is beginning to look closer-even if it doesn't feel like it.
The baseball season cannot come soon enough for me and tonight,it looks like the first trip of the season has been planned even if it is not the first on the calendar.

Looks like a Friday/Saturday trip that will allow me to knock off a new ballpark in Erie Pa along with a return to Akron-this time for the Pedro Cerrano (of Major League fame) bobblehead.
Maybe I can get some of my relatives to come up to Akron and see me for that day????

If I am able to get to Erie, that trims my Pennsylvania ballparks needs to just Scranton and Philadelphia to cover all the the stadiums in that state.
My Ohio needs also is at three, but doesn't look like any of them will get added this year.
Those parks are in Cincinnati,Dayton and Toledo.

Also in the middle of fantasy season as I plan for my "big" league that includes minor leaguers.
I also am playing in a National League only league (need two teams,so let me know and you might get a team) and will be playing on a new website that I was invited on for the LPGA,so the fantasy world is heating up after a dull winter.
Two years in a row without a hockey or hoops league can make winter a less than fun time....

My audio equipment finally arrived-no thanks to the USPS,who claimed they delivered it on Sunday.
Being that I was home all day and Ed didn't bark (he hates people that come to the door),I think it was misdelivered.
Amazon made it right though and got it right to me via one day shipping!
Via UPS that is!
I've got the recording part down, just need to learn to shift to the PC and then upload it.
It's a learning process for sure!

I also have an interview lined up for us as soon I can smooth the bugs out on this....

Suppose that's all for now.
I think I'll be working on a signing front tonight to try lower that pile some more before the season!

A few notes

Just a few observations/notes on a very cold night/morning and boy,do I hate this weather.
Ugh,Just horrible.
I often say when the topic comes up-I could handle living in Canada until winter-those folks up there are a different breed.
They put up with this almost every day during this time of year-far tougher than I am when it comes to the cold.
I often think about going back to Ohio and I've kinda resigned myself that it likely will not happen for two reasons.
The first is that I want to stay close to the kids and unless they move away from here,I'm likely not going anywhere.
The other? It's colder there than here and this is too cold for me!!

Hoping to have my podcast equipment here soon.
The tracking says sometime today, but I'll believe that when I see it and I still need a USB cord too.
If all breaks perfect,I could have the first show early next week,if I can figure out what I am doing, that is....

I have some questions for a future Q and A ready and I still need to knock cards out to put away from last season,so there will be some signing fronts coming.
I always start the season well on the signing front and then the cards start to accumulate and I jsut get behind.
Once the season ends, then the urgency isn't so important....

Not sure,if I would have ever seen this coming, but I like to watch golf more than college basketball anymore.
Any of the three tours (PGA,Champions or LPGA) I enjoy watching and with my slowly decreasing interest in the college game-mainly to the loss of rivalries and the "one and done" players,I give golf the edge,
I do still enjoy the conference tournaments, especially the smaller ones and March Madness, but with a few exceptions,I just don't watch much during the regular season....

I also have begun to casually collect the 1965 Topps baseball set.
I rather doubt that I'll ever finish it,but visually the 1965 set is my favorite of the 60's and I decided to go after it.
The lovely Cherie was surprised as I usually collect things within my lifetime, but sometimes one mixes things up.
If I ever did a set from the 1950's though,it would not be one of the mainstream Topps sets-it would be either the 1951 Topps red and blue back sets or the Red Man chewing tobacco sets for sentimental reasons.
Don't bet on me doing either, although I might buy a few just for fun....

Finally,a short note on other things that I am adding to the collection soon-I need to add a 2014 National Champions Buckeye helmet to the mini helmet collection and another possibility is beginning to collect things from the Batman TV show.
The lovely Cherie has given the provisional OK for that-IF I get rid of some other things to make space.
I'm amenable to that, but not until things warm a bit.Just too cold to spend time in the attic......

Ohio State freezes out Minnesota 31-24

J.T. Barrett threw three touchdowns and ran for another as the Ohio State Buckeyes survived snowy conditions to defeat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 31-24 at a cold Minneapolis.
Barrett's 86 yard TD run was the key chunk of his 189 yards on the ground and Barrett added another 200 through the air.
The now 9-1 (6-0 Big 10) Buckeyes will return to the Horseshoe for their final two games of the regular season-next week vs Indiana and the following Saturday vs that team up north.

Olentangy Offerings

1) J.T. Barrett is slowly winning me over as a Heisman candidate.
In a year without a candidate that stands out,Barrett is accumulating numbers that deserve at least an invite to the ceremony for the Heisman,
Barrett's 38 total of touchdowns are already more (with 2 games to go) than both of the last two winners (both also freshman QB's) Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston did in their winning seasons...

2) The Barrett run was the longest TD run for a quarterback in Ohio State history and his 189 yards rushing was the most ever for a OSU quarterback.
For the first time,I'm starting to lend a little credence to the idea of Braxton Miller transferring someplace for next season.
I'm not sure that even Urban Meyer can pull off a system that is going to make two quarterbacks of this quality happy..

3) This game was not that close.
Two turnovers basically handed Minnesota field position for two touchdowns and even when the score was close, which during two different times-I never had that feeling that the game was slipping away,..

4) Jalen Marshall is going to be a big time playmaker, but he is going to have take better care of the ball.
Marshall was fast and loose with a fumble off a catch just before he scored and caused a touchback and later fumbled a punt that gave Minnesota a short drive for a TD.
This should come along, but needs to improve...

5) The cold and snow had its share in the game, but didn't seem to be overwhelming.
Ohio State did very well considering the conditions and the wind was strong, but only really played into the game once as the wind took a 52 yard attempt by Minnesota's Ryan Santoso and slammed the ball into a upright on a kick that looked like was going to be successful...

6) The run defense still concerns me as David Cobb rushed for 145 yards and three scores.
Cobb is a good back, but not the type of back that Ohio State is going to face in Indianapolis in Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon.
That needs to be shaped up and soon.

7) Another key play was early in the third quarter when a touchdown off an interception was called back for a pass interference.
The Minnesota receiver was falling down, but the defender did have a hand on him.
I thought the flag was light, but usually a grab and clutch means penalty,,

8) Cold? Yep. The 15 degrees at kickoff was the coldest for the Buckeyes since their 1964 game against michigan,
Even in the Big 10,if Minnesota can ever get their program to the top, that stadium is going to be quite an advantage.
Why the NFL Vikings didn't take that into account shows that dollars were more important to them than winning...

9) Joey Bosa bounced back from a tough day in East Lansing with seven tackles and a sack.
Bosa did have a knee brace, but it didn't seem to affect his any..

10) Ohio State entered the day 8th in the playoff ratings,
The question becomes how much do they jump?
Minnesota sliding into the ratings last week at 25 will help a smidgen in the quality win category and the late night loss by number six Arizona State will guarantee one spot.
The key becomes how far does Mississippi State fall after their first loss and could 4th rated TCU slide after a close four point win over a three win Kansas team....
