The Cleveland Browns made another deal to bolster the defensive line late night in trading with the Detroit Lions for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers.
Rogers reportedly was headed to Cincinnati for the Bengals 3rd and 5th round draft picks, but the deal fell through as the Browns swapped their 3rd round pick and starting corner Leigh Bodden in return for Rogers.
Rogers (like yesterday's pickup Corey Williams) had seven sacks last season in his first 16 game season in 3 years.
The former Texas Longhorn missed time in 2006 due to a four game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance that was reported to be a weight loss substance, but had been a full time player prior to 2006.
Rogers has shown flashes of dominance in Detroit and has named to 2 Pro Bowls, but has been downgraded at times for being overweight and seems to take plays off on occasion.
Rogers also brings a rare skill to the Browns,as he has blocked 11 kicks in his career.
That total leads the NFL since the stat began to be kept in 1991.
The Browns have now improved the interior defensive line with Rogers and Williams, but at what cost?
The Browns will now not select in the draft until the middle of the 4th round and have moved Bodden, who was the Browns corner that covered the opponents top wideout.
This seems to put extra pressure on second year man Eric Wright to move to the number 1 corner and sophomore Brandon McDonald, who will likely move into the second corner slot.
Wright was up and down as a rookie, but showed top flight potential.
McDonald had a few moments, most notably in a huge game that he started against the Jets.
The youngsters will relied on heavily to continue their maturation process because they look to have few options behind them at the corner.
Bodden will be missed and I do fear that the Browns have unplugged one hole to plug another.
The Seattle Seahawks and their cap problems have cost them star
kicker Josh Brown to division rival St.Louis.
The Rams lost their long time booter Jeff Wilkins to retirement and acted swiftly to bring Brown to the Gateway city.
Brown will be a difficult player to replace as Seattle is known as a tough place to kick and Brown's record there at Qwest Field was tremendous.
No word on any Seattle interest on a specific veteran replacement.
The New Jersey Devils were able to use Marty Brodeur's brilliance for the first two periods to keep a game that should have been out of hand within a goal, but a horrid third period allowed visiting Washington to pull away and take a 4-0 win out of the Rock.
Soft defensive play in the final period and Brodeur seeming a bit listless after the Capitals 2nd goal added up to the huge loss.
I think Marty is due for a rest to break up the monotony, but with tonight's game being in hometown Montreal, there is no way in hell that he allows that to happen.
So I suppose that I can hope that Brent Sutter will at least give Kevin Weekes the nod in the following game on Tuesday in Toronto.
The offense has been atrocious over the last few games and I wish that I could say why.
Lets chalk this one to a bad night and hope for a better effort tonight.
I mean when Donald Brashear scores a goal-you know that it is not your night!
No pitchforks for that effort-Disconnect their buzzer !(Inside joke)
Devils are in Montreal tonight against the Canadiens.
