Jason Davis had a rocky start in inning number one,but was excellent thereafter.
However, the two runs the Mets scored in the first inning were enough to hold off the Pirates in a 2-1 New York win.
The Pirates had chances off Mike Pelfrey, but squandered them on the bases.
Nate McLouth led off the sixth with a double, but was quickly caught in a rundown and thrown out on a comebacker to Pelfrey off the bat of Freddy Sanchez.
Adam LaRoche was thrown out at the plate by Carlos Beltran's throw in the seventh to lose another scoring chance.
The Pirates only run was off reliever Duaner Sanchez in the eighth on a Jack Wilson solo homer (1).
Jason Davis was very sharp in the innings after the first and finished the game with a solid seven innings, scattering only six hits and both walking and whiffing three Mets.
Davis fell to 1-2 with the tough luck loss.
The series second game is tonight at 7.

Bullpen Notes
Will someone please tell the New York Mets that their colors are Blue and Orange.
Their all black togs not only are ugly, but not even team colors!
Ballpark Digest is reporting that the Bowling Green/Lake County shift to the Midwest League is off and the schedule looks the same as usual.
I kinda wanted the teams to stay in the SAL,but would liked a better schedule.
The State College Spikes will send two players to the New York-Penn league All-Star game on Tuesday night.
Shortstop Chase D'Arnaud (3rd Round Pepperdine) and third baseman Jeremy Farrell (8th Round Virginia) will represent the Spikes.
Until tomorrow
