David Clarkson chipped home a power play goal (1) with under four minutes to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers.
The win gives the Devils a four point sweep of their Florida swing before the Devils complete the trip tomorrow night against Washington.
Travis Zajac and Rob Niedermayer each scored their second goal of the season for the Devils in the win,Zajac's being on the man advantage.
Hell Raisers
1) Player of the game had to be Travis Zajac.
Between his goal and perfect assist to Clarkson for the game winner,Zajac played very well and is showing signs of making this season his breakout year with his confident play.
Travis has stepped up thus far and been the offensive force that the Devils are missing until the return of Patrik Elias.
2) The Devils controlled the game far more than the score indicates as the Devs outshot the Panthers 41-21.
Ironically for all the talk about Jacques Lemaire being so defensive minded,New Jersey seems more aggressive about firing at the net than making the perfect pass than under the supposedly more offensive minded Brent Sutter and that has been an early season surprise.
The goal by Zajac was a great example of this.
3) I like David Clarkson getting power play time as I think that he presents chances on the PP that resemble last nights winner by crashing the net and hanging around for the cleanup.
But I wish Lemaire would move him up from the 4th line to the 3rd line as that would be a better scoring fit.
4) Paul Martin had a great game as well, stepping up into the zone, stopping the Panther forecheck and assisting on the Niedermayer goal in which he showed smarts in holding the puck until the Panthers made a move and then deftly flicking the puck to Niedermayer.
This is the type of effort that you expect from your teams number one defenseman.
5) Opposing credit has to go to Tomas Vokoun, who played a super game.
This game could have easily been 6-2 without his outstanding game, those of you fantasy owners out there that have a chance to grab Vokoun-Do so.
Will try to be back later, but no promises.
Look for lots of stuff coming up over the next few days with all the football tape work and I have built up a steady pile of items for the melting pot.
