The boxing challenge is a little light this weekend as each night will offer one show without competition.
I actually like scheduling this way, it doesn't force you to choose what you want to watch and gives a show the full boxing audience which I would think is a very good thing!
Saturday belongs to ESPN+ as hopefully, the third time will be the charm as Jamel Herring defends his WBO junior lightweight championship against Jonathan Oquendo.
Herring's title defense has been postponed twice due to positive Covid-19 tests, the latter postponement having a good deal of controversy after Herring tested positive and then negative for the virus.
Herring is a solid favorite after defeating undefeated mandatory challenger Lamont Roach in his last fight, the same Roach that decisioned Oquendo last March.
Should Herring emerge victorious, he is expected to meet former two-division champion Carl Frampton in his next title defense.
The co-feature will pair undefeated super middleweight Steven Nelson against veteran DeAndre Ware in a ten rounder.
Nelson takes another step in competition after his most recent fight saw his first move forward in an impressive domination of then-undefeated Cem Kilic in January.
Nelson won the first seven rounds and forced Kilic's trainer Buddy McGirt to toss in the official surrender midway through the eighth round.
Ware was once a touted prospect before losing a shocking eight round decision to the above mentioned Kilic in September 2018.
Ware then stunned observers again with an upset win in his next fight against undefeated and well-thought of Ronald Ellis via majority decision.
Vladimir Shishkin then stopped Ware in eight in his most recent fight, so who knows what version of Ware will answer the bell for this fight, but he's still the best opponent that Nelson has faced.
Sunday night moves the scene to Fox and PBC with yet another uncompetitive matchup for yet another of the ridiculous WBA title belts (Plural) as Yordenis Ugas stays active against Abel Ramos.
Ugas, who has lost once in the last eight years in a split decision that could have been given to either man against Shawn Porter, has lost barely a round in his last two fights against Omar Figueroa and Mike Dallas, and I doubt he will lose more than that against Ramos.
Ramos gets this shot after knocking out Bryant Perrella in the tenth round in a fight that he was far behind on the scorecards and referee Jack Reiss stopped the fight with one second to go after Perrella rose from a knockdown.
If you are overmatched vs Perrella, a solid fighter but certainly not elite in the division, he'll be fortunate to be effective against Ugas.
Another mismatch on national television.
The co-main event is for another "wonderful" WBA title in the junior welterweight division as Rances Barthelemy faces Alberto Puello.
Barthelemy is a former IBF champion at both 130 and 135 pounds, but hasn't fought since April of last year and in his last four fights holds two distinctions of dishonor.
In May 2017, Barthelemy won one of the worst decisions that I've ever over Kiryl Relikh (Relikh would win the rematch) and in his last fight, Barthelemy's draw with Robert Easter was the worst fight to main event on Showtime.
In that "fight" neither fighter landed 55 punches over the twelve rounds and I didn't even mention another snorner of a win against Mickey Bey in the past!
Alberto Puello is undefeated, but has never fought outside of the Dominican Republic and only his win over then-undefeated Jonathan Alonso stands out on his record.
I wonder about this one with Barthelemy's record with stinkers and knowing little about Puello, this might be an awful fight.
In the boxing challenge, I lead Ramon Malpica 101-94
