Podcasts, you say?
Well, my podcast tenure has been up and down (running out of dollars for the TRS podcast for one) and my tenure on Fightheads- the live show.
I loved doing the live show, but Ramon and I had stated that we were still going to be around in various formats and we are.
You can find my occasional podcast, Ramon's "Mind of Malpica" and our shows together here and be sure to give an ITunes review too.
Ramon says it helps to move us up the ranking etc, so help us out if you can.
I knocked a single PC out last weekend talking about boxing and the Browns and we did one together a while back.
I plan to do one or two solo's each week and I want to bring back guests on my solo appearances very much like the old show, so thanks to Ramon for allowing me to do that and our shows together as well.
There's more than just Ramon's podcast and mine in this post though, so here's a few more of interest (pun intended) that we have listened to and enjoyed of late!
Starting with "Nerd Appropriate" and their 300th episode where they landed Amy Acker ( "Root" of Person of Interest and therefore the above pun) for their show.
If you aren't a fan of POI or Amy's current show "The Gifted" or are unfamiliar with her other work,
you might remember her as last year's face of the PPM.
As an Acker fan, I really enjoyed this and she comes off as someone totally unfazed by fame and as one of the nicest people in show business-Now that would be someone I'd love to have on the "New" TRS podcast.
Another interesting listen was posted on Twitter as one of their past podcasts with Rebecca Jarvis of ABC News and her "No Limits" with guest Erica Hill of CNN/HLN.
I've always liked Hill going back to her early days at CNN before she traveled to the networks before returning back to the "Turner" networks and I prefer her to all the CNN anchors in the afternoon when her HLN show airs.
My biggest issue with HLN, which makes sense with the name of their network as Headline News, is seeing the same items over and over again, so I don't watch it often, but Hill would be great with CNN and an afternoon slot.
Hill talks about the news game, the problems for women in the field and mistakes that she has made, which I thought was refreshingly honest.
And it wouldn't be a podcast post without a sports one and here is a two-part episode that I loved as "Good Seats" spends two and a half hours with author Mark Speck (another person I'd love to have as a guest) talking about the World Football League.
Good Seats is a podcast that you are going to see a lot here at TRS as they deal with defunct sports leagues and as they write "What used to be in professional sports", so look for more on future podcast posts or cleaning out the inbox segments.
I'm not sure if I mentioned it here (I know I did on social media), but I was given a WFL game ball recently by a friend and I play WFL games on the time on my Action Football game, so for me, I loved listening.
Speck has written two books on the WFL that I'd love to read that I haven't been able to yet, but they aren't available on Kindle and they are pretty pricey to boot.
Part one can be found here and part two in this location.
Hope you found a podcast or two to listen and maybe even Fightheads, I think this will become an
occasional fixture here, so send me a podcast that I might find interesting and it might wind up in a future post.

Post-Super Bowl PPM
I just realized that I did not do a PPM for the Super Bowl.
In and all honesty, I would have picked New England by 10-14, so for posterity-Here is the final PPM record for 2017-
137-71.
The PPM is a lighthearted part of following football and I've always enjoyed it without taking a ton of time to try to do well!
Hope you enjoyed following this year's PPM and this year's unofficial host-Amy Acker.
I'm considering a mild change to the PPM for next season so we will see how that goes...

As last year, we will be doing all of the "New Year's Six" games with next week's Semi-Final games.
In the spirit of the holiday season, the picture to the left is from when Amy Acker did one of those awful Hallmark Christmas films with enough sugar to bounce you off the walls for a month and that's from the premiere.
I would wager my house that the picture is better than the film without seeing one second of the film...

This was prepared early, so look for that tonight or early tomorrow morning!.

Confessions...
I quite enjoyed Confessionals when I first wrote about this back in July and I thought it was time to revisit now.
Keep in mind some of these are things I haven't written/told about and others are general knowledge...
1) I'll be doing a Ric Flair piece this week on his 30 for 30, but here's a sneak peek- I was a little disappointed in it...
2) If anyone comes to town to visit me and wants to go out to eat at a place that they can't visit at home-I only have two non-chain staples.
Washington Chicken and Vince's Pizza.
Vince's isn't for the pizza (I know you have to be tired of hearing me rave about Ohio pizza) it's for the terrific burgers that they sell...
3) I go back and forth over the last 10-15 years on my favorite comedy (non-premium channel) between The Office and Parks and Recreation.
Love them both and seem to give one a hairline edge over the other-When I am watching that particular one.
4) If we are in one of those "pick to save the world" scenarios- I'll take Parks for just one reason.
They didn't have a bad season as the Office did in the next to last season when they force-fed James Spader in as the new CEO as "Robert California".
The season is fine when Spader isn't in it, but when he is- not so swift.
5) If you follow me on Twitter, you probably see me follow lots of different people from lots of different areas, but I'd guess if I had to guess on what the most "liked" topic was (in amount of liking other people's non-sports posts on my timeline), I'd wager it's actress Amy Acker.
This is because of the people that follow me from the days of "Person of Interest" television and their Acker pics on the timeline are always showing up.
6) As much as I like Acker, her new show "The Gifted" isn't doing much for me so far.
It's not bad, it's just not catching my interest in the way that a first-year show should.
It's too bad because I was really hoping to love it.
7) I know that you know that my favorite football conference is the Big 10 and you likely know that I see a lot of Boise State and Houston along with rooting for Bowling Green, but this year, I've really enjoyed the Pac 12.
I know their champion won't be in the title chase this year, but the games are generally fun to watch and almost anyone has a chance of beating anyone else.
8) It's been at least 15 years since I cared enough even to be mildly interested in pro wrestling, but my YouTube guilty pleasure is wrestling from the NWA in the 1980's.
Other than music and odd TV clips, the Crockett promotion is my YT winner for most often viewed.
9) I know I've been quoted as saying that the next big female star in sports television is going to be Olivia Harlan and she may very well be, but I've changed my mind- it's Laura Rutledge.
Rutledge sits in on Monday's and Tuesday's on the Paul Finebaum Show (I know what's a Big Ten guy watching an SEC show for, but it's entertaining and the BTN attempts at this type of show have been dreadful) and she's incredibly knowledgeable.
Rutledge is going to be a huge star in the football television game and she's so good that I wouldn't mind seeing her give play by play a shot someday,
10) I'm stretching my stadium radius farther than I ever thought possible (25 + new stadiums between 2016 & 2017) and it's to the point that there won't be too much more that I'll add in a given year.
So when I'm asked these questions- Which new place (within possibility) do you want to see most in 2018 and which place would I like to go back to most, I have to think about it.
Here goes;
I'm going to go with one place that is most realistic for 2018 and one that I want to do but is unlikely.
Kingsport, Tennessee is the most realistic as it can be done in a day (Albeit a very long day) and would complete the Appalachian League for me.
My most wanted and unlikely stop is a tie between Myrtle Beach South Carolina (I've visited the stadium, but not for a game) and Dayton, Ohio.
Myrtle Beach would complete the Carolina League for me, while Dayton would finish the state of Ohio, so both have appeal.
For the place that I liked so much that I would like to return to again, it's a three-way tie.
I really liked Buies Creek North Carolina, the autographing was great and it's only going to be used for one more season before the new stadium in Fayetteville North Carolina is up and ready for 2019.
I also really liked BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem North Carolina.
I didn't get to spend as much time there because we had to hit Danville VA that night, but I liked it enough that I'd like to spend more time there.
The main AAA field was Louisville, I just loved the stadium and even though I didn't get one card signed, the ballpark was great and I really liked the city.

Cleaning out the inbox-Entertainment Style
Lots of items in the inbox and yet not enough time to post them, so I'm going to start with an entertainment cleaning with a little of everything considered entertainment!!These lovely gentlemen on the right are Green Goblin, Electro, and Vulture from the classic 1967 Spiderman animated series, which was not only memorable to kids of the 1960's on ABC on Saturday mornings but the 1970's as well in syndication.
The site 13th Dimension takes a glance back at the first mainstream appearances to bring Spiderman outside of comic book racks with this series and picks 13 great things about the show!
I have the DVD set but haven't watched it in quite a while and apparently, it's one of the harder DVD sets to find to the point of being fairly expensive on eBay and Amazon, which is not something that I would have thought.
Staying with animated series, Beth Daniels for Smithsonian Magazine writes about the Rocky and Bullwinkle series from the Jay Ward studios in the early 1960's and how the show was not only entertaining children but teaching viewers about political satire.
Daniels writes about how Bullwinkle gently jabbed at the nuclear age at a time that was the peak of the Cold War and all of the talented voices that were used on the show that was able to appeal to adults as well.
I remember watching that show as a child and even then thinking that this stuff was way over the head of most kids and yet it was funny enough to still get a kid laughing without letting them in on the joke!
It also mentions such comedy from the time when comedy often was released on LP's, Do you remember those Long Playing records with comedians like Tom Lehrer (remember our post on Lehrer?) to name one from the era.
It's great stuff from Daniels, who seems to write about things that I'm interested in and I bet her work appears here in the future...
Rachel Thompson of SeriesFuse discusses how "Root" of Person of Interest became one of her favorite characters after watching the show on DVD.
You've likely seen Amy Acker, who portrayed Root here often of late as this year's face of the PPM.
Acker's character along with "Shaw" played by Sarah Shahi were the variables in the show that drew a line from before they arrived (although Acker was an occasional guest star early on in the show's run) to after they were regulars.
Some fans loved the new additions, some preferred before they arrived (like Cherie and Rachel), so it was quite polarizing among the fan base.
My opinion?
I liked both versions of the show and respected the differences in them.
I loved Root and Acker, but the Shaw character seemed too much like another character and despite liking Shahi in "Life", her character here was not a favorite of mine.
Hot Press covers the "Wrecking Crew", the legendary group of studio musicians that included Glen Campbell, that played on just about every great record in the 1960's that you've ever heard of.
The Wrecking Crew were the backup band for so many terrific songs that might have been stars had they wanted to tour and spent time promoting records etc and would rather have spent their time playing music with the added advantage of having a regular home life.
Another note is that on the Beach Boys critically acclaimed album "Pet Sounds", the music portion is almost all the Wrecking Crew, not the Beach Boys because the Beach Boys (minus Brian Wilson) were on the road during most of the recording of that album....
We wrap up with another visit to the Smithsonian website for an article about good ol' SPAM, the Hormel mixed meat product that so many either love or hate.
Personally. about twice a year, I really get in the mood for SPAM and I'll grab a can from the grocery store.
I like it on bread (no rolls), yellow mustard, cheez whiz (Cheese perfected by science) and onion.
The article talks about how the products were developed, different countries love of the product and some recent variations of SPAM.
The funny thing about SPAM is that gross jell that always comes with it.
I always rinse SPAM off before using it because of the yucky film all over it!
Anyway, the really funny part is when you look at the knockoff SPAM products by competing companies such as Treet or Dak.
If you think SPAM looks or tastes bad, try Treet (which tastes like those awful Vienna Sausages, if you ground them up and then pressed them into shape) or Dak, which uses a different style of a can, but its taste is the worst of them all!!
Still plenty more from the inbox coming soon that needs to be freed from confinement!!
