Two in a row and more sweeping up.

Ross Ohlendorf was dominant in his first appearance with the Pirates for 3 innings, vulnerable for the next three, but the Pirates were able to get by the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 for the their second win in two days.
A win today at 12;35 and (according to Lou Brown) that's called a winning streak.

The Pirates were able to get the most out of the six hits that they scraped together off Reds ace Edinson Volquez and wound up with 4 runs off the starter, despite fanning 13 times against the hard throwing righty.
Doubles by Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Doumit produced the first runs of the game and a 2-0 lead.
The Reds used two homers and a passed ball that bounced off Doumit's chest protector to take the lead back at 3-2 after 5 innings.
The Pirates took the lead back as Doumit's single scored Sanchez and an Adam LaRoche singled plate Nate McLouth in the sixth.
Cincinnati tied the contest in the bottom of the inning off Ohlendorf and sent him to showers after the innings end.
Ohlendorf finished with 4 runs allowed (3 earned) on 7 hits, struck out two and walked one on the night.
The Pirates won the game in the eighth as each of the LaRoche brothers rapped RBI singles for a 6-4 lead and the Reds one run in the eighth was not enough to tie the game.
Tyler Yates was the winner (5-3) and Matt Capps finished up for his 19th save.

Ohlendorf was impressive in spots, but didn't seem to have the overwhelming fastball that he is reputed to have and the run that scored on the passed ball appeared to be due to crossed signals.
Doumit appeared to be expecting fastball and Ohlendorf came in with the curve.
Those things will happen in September!

The Pirates will attempt to sweep the Reds today at 12:35

Pitching Matchup
Pittsburgh:Tom Gorzelanny (6-9 6.61) at Cincinnati:Josh Fogg (2-7 7.29 ERA) 12:35

Bullpen Notes

Those are some pretty awful ERA's above this, aren't they?

Anyone want to tell me why in the hell Nyjer Morgan is playing and Steve Pearce isn't?
I don't have anything against Nyjer Morgan as a person,he has always been a gracious gentleman in person, but he simply is not a prospect for every day duty.
Not today,not tomorrow-not ever.
Steve Pearce may not be either, but he may be and watching Nyjer Morgan play from the bench gets the Pirates no closer to finding out.....

While we were gone, the Ashland Arrows traveled to Bellevue to battle what they may have thought was a faded former power in high school football.
They left town with a 36-20 loss to the Redmen and questions as they host the powerhouse Kettering Alter Knights this Friday in Ashland.
Kettering Alter is a Catholic private school and this gives me a chance to offer an opinion on something that Maryland does better than Ohio (Imagine that!)
In Ohio, the private schools compete in the state tournaments against the public schools in every sport for the state title, while in Maryland the private schools are ineligible for the state tournaments.
I agree with the Maryland policy as the private schools have the advantage of recruiting that public schools do not and that creates a lopsided field for competition, especially in basketball.
I have no problems with teams from each side of the field playing each other and having the games count in regular season play, but not in the state championships.

Our friend over at Wooden's World of Baseball looks at playoff baseball from the Potomac Nationals view.
Blog favorite Erik Arnesen will be starting Game 2 of the Eastern Finals against Wilmington for the P-Nats.

Doesn't it seem like there are fewer Lightning Bugs or Fireflies (depending on where you live) than when we were kids?
Well, the lovely Cherie sends this article on why this seems to be true and the loss to the children of today.
I fondly remember many summer nights as a child catching them in a jar and then releasing them at the end of the evening.......

And a sad note to all of us Peanuts fans out there,Bill Melendez passed away in California at the age of 91.
Melendez was the animator for all of the wonderful peanuts specials that we loved as children and pass down to our kids now.
Melendez was the only person ever allowed by Peanuts creator Charles Schulz to have the honor of working with the characters and was the long time "voice" of Snoopy and Woodstock as well.

Wooden sends us word of the passing of Wrestling legend Killer Kowalski recently.
Kowalski was one of the biggest stars of the 50's and 60's and was most famous for accidentally removing the ear (True and not a work) of Yukon Eric in the 50's.
Kowalski has mainly operated a wrestling school for years and has mostly stayed out of the ring. The Killer was 82.

Finally, heads up to the Bowling Green Falcons for their upset win in Pittsburgh over the Panthers 27-17.
The Falcons rallied from a 14-0 deficit in the victory and now return home to Doyt Perry Stadium for a game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Until later,if I have time to get a preview up today.
