Nationals nip Pirates 3-2

In a surprisingly fast game between two less than stellar teams, the Washington Nationals were able to be the first team to score off John Grabow in the 8th inning to break a tie and gain the victory 3-2.
Zach Duke allowed just 2 runs (both in the second inning) and 5 hits in 7 innings before leaving with a no decision.
Grabow fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Both Pirates runs came on solo homers as Freddy Sanchez connected in the fourth for his first of the season and Ryan Doumit tied the game at in the fifth inning (5) with a single shot.
Duke's start was encouraging and Grabow has pitched so well that I choose not to jump on his first bad outing, not that a 1 run inning is that horrible.
Game 2 is tonight in Washington.

Bullpen Notes

No word on why Pirate prospect Olivo Astacio was released except that it was not steroid/drug related.
This tells me that it had to be something off the field that the Pirates want to attempt to keep quiet.

Former CNN Anchor Aaron Brown has found a new job with PBS and their show Wide Angle.
I liked Brown's work at ABC and CNN,but he is not the flashiest anchor around, which is probably why I liked him and his work.

A good interview here with former multi-network anchor Roger Mudd.
Mudd has a new book(The Place to Be: Washington, CBS, and the Glory Days of Television News.) out on his days at CBS News that I am looking forward to reading.

I was going to do a On the signing front, but I will wait until tomorrow.
That way I can cover the entire West Virginia Power signatures before Saturday's series opener vs the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
