Crackin' the Shell-Ohio State wallops Maryland 62-14

J.T.Barrett threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to team with a fierce defense that allowed just 66 yards of offense and lead the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 62-14 thumping of the Maryland Terrapins in Columbus.
Eight different Buckeyes scored touchdowns in the romp over the ugliest helmets in the land as Ohio State improved to 5-1 (3-0 Big 10 ) on the season.
The Buckeyes will travel to Lincoln next week to visit the Cornhuskers...

Olentangy Offerings

1) Ohio State did as they wished except for on special teams where they struggled.
A missed field goal, another field goal that was blocked, a fumbled hold on an extra point and a kick returned for a touchdown that was Maryland's only score until the final few minutes of the game.

2) The special teams aren't going to kill the Buckeyes against the ilk of Maryland and the other weak sisters of the last few weeks, but the schedule is toughening up soon.
Nebraska is nothing special, but even with their problems the Huskers are still better than Maryland and their 3rd & 4th string QB and Maryland was better than Rutgers.
I have a feeling that sometime against better competition, this bugaboo might return.

3) J.T.Barrett seems to be rounding into form, the long ball is looking better and his accuracy is improved as well.
However, I have written that Barrett would make an upturn in performance against the weaker part of the schedule that followed Oklahoma.
The question that won't be answered for three weeks is this-can Barrett maintain this level of performance against the stronger teams on the schedule that begin with Penn State.

4) The penalty for targeting is one that every fan base screams about for week to week and the Ohio State fan base is no different as for the first half against Nebraska will see both Buckeye starting corners possibly on the bench.
I agreed with the penalty on Damon Arnette but thought the Denzel Ward penalty was one that was accidental, which should be a penalty, but an ejection only under the current rule.
The rule needs to be refined to one that rules that if no intent was meant as the hit, it involves a 15-yard penalty but not an ejection.

5) Starting right guard Brandon Bowen broke his leg in the first half and will miss the remainder of the season.
Bowen's loss will be felt along a offensive line that still is jelling as a unit.

6) Ohio State used several backs over the course of the blowout, but the name I was most interested in seeing carried the ball just three times for eight yards.
DeMario McCall reminds me a lot of Curtis Samuel and if I'm right, McCall if used in that role, just might have a big part of the eventual outcome...

7) Nick Bosa sacked the passer and stripped him of the ball on the first possession of Maryland.Jerome Baker scooped and scored and the rout was on.
Next season, with Nick Bosa and Chase Young on each end, this team is going to run roughshod over opposing quarterbacks.

8) Chase Young would do the same as Bosa in the second half minus the touchdown.
Chase Young might eventually be a top five NFL draft pick-he's going to be that good..

9) Maryland's helmets are just so ugly,
They should start each game down seven, just for wearing those....

10) Nebraska had issues stopping the run vs Wisconsin in their loss on Saturday with Badger back Anthony Taylor rushing for 249 yards vs Herbie.
Look for a lot of Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins next week in Lincoln.

11) Urban Meyer showed some mercy to Maryland in D.J. Durbin that he didn't to Rutgers and UNLV.
Meyer put Dwayne Haskins in the lineup and threw only four passes with him.
That's sportsmanlike, but not helping Haskins if he is needed to play.
Why was this?
Durbin is a former Meyer assistant, but so was Rutgers head coach Chris Ash.
I think Meyer knows that Durbin is going to have Maryland make somewhat of a run sometime in the few years and he wants it on good terms when it happens.
