Dana Eveland obtained from Blue Jays
The Pirates brought Dana Eveland in to add to the Pirate rotation today.
Pittsburgh obtained Eveland from Toronto in exchange for AA reliever Ronald Uviedo and will install him in the rotation and will likely stay in the fifth spot once Charlie Morton returns from the disabled list with Brian Burres losing his spot thereafter.
Eveland was designated for assignment last week after being hammered in his last three starts for the Blue Jays.
The Pirates will be the fifth team for the lefthander, who had his best season with Oakland with a 9-9 2008,but has been awful ever since.
The question that I offer is why Uviedo?
Uviedo had an ERA in the threes this season and is averaging more than a strikeout an inning for AA Altoona.
When you consider his fastball reaches the low 90's and his ability to find the strike zone,Uviedo appears to be just the type of pitcher that the Pirates have been trying to obtain for the system, not give away for the likes of Dana Eveland.
All and all, this might be the type of deal that winds up in the agate type in a few years, but could look like the Leo Nunez for 10 games of Benito Santiago deal down the road if Uviedo turns out.
This looks like the first panic move of Neal Huntington's regime and perhaps there is more to the rumors of Huntington running out of time.
I hadn't thought much of those rumors, but maybe Huntington is starting to sweat a bit....
