Crawdads Creek..-Position Players
Here is the promised look at the Hickory Crawdads.
I will try to give a synopsis and opinion.
Please remember the opinion is based on what I saw during the Hagerstown series, for the most part.
C; Kris Watts:Watts had 3 hits in 3 games,including a homer.
Hagerstown is not the most power friendly park,so a homer here make one think a bit.
Defensively, seemed to be average.Nothing to stand out in a positive or negative fashion.
But his arm was better than advertised, threw out 3 of 4 Suns runners on steal attempts and the safe runner was a bang-bang type call.
Could develop into a backup type catcher.
Francis Poni;o for 3 in his only appearance.Poni appears to be an organizational guy.
1b; Kent Sakamoto; Kent didnt do a lot during this series.
Kinda a slow bat and his glovework taking throws left a lot to be desired.
Jared Keel played one game during the series and made a miscue to contribute to the Crawdads only loss here.
2b:Jim Negrych; Well,Negrych does appear to have a chance to be a solid bat, having IMO more than average pop for a second sacker.
The downside?the glove is only average and given DL's love for the glove, could be Negrych;s achilles heel in this system.
Michael Ambrose made his pro debut in the final game and was the other contributing factor to the loss to Hagerstown.Went 0 for 3 and a miscue, but too small a sample for a solid opinion
ss;Angel Gonzalez; Angel had 5 hits in the 4 games and 1 was a triple.
Not a ton of plate discipline though.
Was pleasantly surprised with his fielding,no errors and lots of range.
Someone to keep in mind.
3b;Eddie Prasch;A returning Crawdad,Prasch played all 4 games and had only 3 hits.
But all 3 were extra bases and his fielding seemed much improved over his trip here last year.
The one negative on Prasch is his throwing from 3rd.Seems like he is always in a hurry to release the ball and has a whipping motion as a result.
The numbers didnt indicate it,but I came away from this series with a more favorable opinion of Eddie than last year.Cannot quite put my finger on why,but I wouldnt give up on him yet.
OF:Jamie Romak; The player who shouldnt have been here to begin with showed why.
Romak played RF,showed decent range and a nice enough arm to get by there.
He came with the rap of being slow, but I would say average speed.
Romak hit 2 homers during the series and hit a pair of doubles as well.
Has a high motor as well.
He is going to strike out some-no getting around that.
But I liked him a lot,I am hoping the Bucs like him as much as I do!
OF; James Boone: Boone played cf for 3 games and was the DH for one.
Homered and hit 3 singles for the series.
His plate discipline doesnt seem to have improved,no walks during the series, looks like Wilbur's report on him there was dead on.
Seemed to struggle defensively, but cannot hold that against him,Hagerstown and its odd left and center fields has given many a visitor problems.
In the end, just have a gut feeling that this one isnt going to hold up at higher levels.
OF;Alex Presley;
Alex played 3 games in the series, had 3 hits in the middle game and nothing else the other 2 games.Struck out 5 times and only walked once.
Presley led off and played left all 3 games. Stole a base and when he got on the Suns pitchers watched him closely.
But defensively-he covered ground, but seemed to have trouble getting the ball in.
I.E-Very weak arm.
I agree with Wilbur-If he can make contact more consistenly, maybe a 4th OF.
Nice guy and seems to have the attitude to want to get better.
OF-Wanell Macia;
Macia went o for 3 in his only action.
Macia entered his 25th season at Hickory(just kidding) and is the perfect organizational guy.
Good attitude, always smiling and just happy to play baseball.
I will try to return tonight with the Pitching report.

I'd been thinking the same thing about Prasch. He looks better, but I'm not quite sure why. He does have some power to the opposite field.
WTM
Sometimes you just get a feeling,I suppose.Lets hope we are correct!
