Pirates fall in extra Innings.
The Pirates lost their 2nd straight game to the
St.Louis Cardinals 3-2 in extra innings last night.
The lowlights of the game for Pittsburgh was were not only the loss of a 2-0 lead in the ninth by Salomon Torres, but the mental mistake in the 9th by Jason Bay and the game winning run being scored because Ronny Paulino dropped the ball.
Paulino's play was shocking because the contact from runner Gary Bennett seemed very light.
Bay's,on the other hand, poor fundementals.
A long fly ball by Albert Pujols,Both runners on 1st and 2nd were able to tag up and advance to 2nd and 3rd.
Bay caught the ball and threw to third, not second.Had he thrown to 2nd,perhaps the tying run would have been forced to stay at 1st and as a result not score on the following hit that tied the game.
Tom Gorzelanny fired 7 shutout innings (only gave up 4 hits and whiffed 5 Cards) and looked the best he has looked quite a while.
One has to like the Pirates top 3 starters outings thus far.
2 excellent starts for Snell and Duke, along with 1 excellent and 1 decent for Gorzelanny.
My worry is the offense-when you face Braden Looper and Randy Keisler and not only drop both games, but score only 2 runs combined, the situation doesnt look good for now.
The Series concludes today at 12;35.
Adam Wainwright for the Cardinals,Paul Malholm for the Pirates.
